Indians prefer smartphones, tablets to do office work: Assocham

Image

More than half of employees at Indian companies prefer to do their office workthrough mobile electronic gadgets like smartphones, iPad and tablets, instead of by staying in offices, a survey today claimed.

The survey, conducted by industry body Assocham, found that majority of the respondents said they do not need to stay in office to be productive, as they carry their electronic devices to remain accessible to colleagues and clients.

The study was conducted among 350 officers and executives in sectors like automobile, banking, manufacturing and real-estate.

At the same time, the study also quoted HR managers and officials of some companies as saying that they have banned access to social networks and use of personal smartphone devices in office premises, fearing productivity loss.

"But most of these respondents said they are revisiting their policies as they can benefit from networking and marketing potential of social media," it added.

As per the Assocham survey, "Over half of the employees at India Inc prefer mobility and employing mobile technology into the workplace to stay connected to their associates, clientele, co-workers, partners and are seeking exemption from the regular desk job."

It also said the growing demand to work from devices is also likely to spurt demand for IT support, including software applications, networking technologies and 3G mobile internet services in the long run.

Most of the respondents said they carry these devices in meeting rooms to take notes.

"Ability to work on the go, being available 24x7 in event of any contingency and increased productivity were certain reasons cited by the respondents as to why they prefer using smart devices at work. Besides, this way they can save several hours spent on commuting," it added.

Sony not worried by Android legal woes

Sony Mobile, which uses Google Android software for its smartphones, has not seen much impact from patent problems of the software platform.
Last week a US jury decided many of Samsung's Google Android-based phones infringed Apple Inc patents.
"We don't see much impact to our business as yet of today," Sony Mobile Chief Executive Kunimasa Suzuki told Reuters.
Suzuki said he was confident to sell more smartphones in its fiscal year 2012-2013 than 34 million in previous year.

Nokia to pay Rs 67,000 for selling defective mobile

Nokia India has been directed by a city district consumer forum to pay Rs 67,000 to one of its customers for selling him a "defective" cell phone and then failing to repair it or refund its price.
The South-II District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum held Nokia guilty of indulging in unfair trade practice for selling a defective phone and then failing to repair it or refund its price since September 2007 when it was first taken for repairs by Delhi resident and complainant Rohan Arora.
The forum also held retailer Luthra Communications guilty of resorting to unfair trade practice.
"When the complainant (Rohan Arora) left the defective piece of good to its manufacturer, it was incumbent upon it either to remove its defect to satisfaction of the complainant or to refund its (mobile's) amount with interest. But opposite party did not bother to resolve such genuine request of the complainant.
"Hence we hold both the opposite parties (Nokia and the retailer) guilty for gross deficiency in service and unfair trade practice and direct them to jointly and severally refund the amount of the handset amounting to Rs 37,000 and to further pay a compensation of Rs 25,000 for supplying a defective good and thereafter not replacing the same or to remove its defect to his satisfaction."
"They shall also pay a sum of Rs 5,000 towards the cost of the proceedings," the bench presided by MC Mehra said.
Arora in his complaint had alleged that the phone, a Nokia E 90 Communicator bought in July 2007 for Rs 37,000, had poor incoming and outgoing audio quality right from the beginning.
He had returned the mobile to Nokia in September 2007 to replace it or repair the defect, he had said adding that the handset was replaced with an old instrument which also had the same problem.
He had also alleged that Nokia flatly refused to refund the cost of the phone. Nokia was proceeded against ex-parte as it had appeared only once before the forum.

Infosys doesn‘t need a leadership change: KV Kamath

Image

Calling the market's opinion of a leadership change requirement as frivolous, KV Kamath, Non-Executive Chairman of Infosys told ET Now that no change in top level management is needed. Kamath said that the Infosys board is completely aligned with the leadership.

Stating that the company has clearly articulated its strategy, Kamath said that 'Infosys 3.0' will undergo changes as and when required. Kamath defended not taking the path that Infosys' competitors take by saying that the company follows strategies that it feels will help in the longer term. "Infosys has gone through all the challenges that the IT industry has faced and has come out shining," he added.

Asked about his approach for Infosys, Kamath said that different companies are led and governed in different ways. The approach for Infosys is different from that adopted for ICICI Bank, he said.

On Wednesday, SD Shibulal, CEO & Managing Director, Infosys spoke to ET Now about the challenges facing the industry and his company's future strategy. Shibulal admitted that the business environment remains subdued.

"We gave our quarterly results about 45 days back and from that point at this point, environment has remained the same. We are still seeing delays in decision making. We are seeing that large deals are going through multiple levels of scrutiny and the confidence to spend is low in certain areas but at the same time from an overall perspective, our strategic direction is getting very good traction with our clients," he said.

"We have always said that we will deliver superior financial performance and our aspiration continues to be to deliver superior financial performance. That would be industry average or above industry average growth as well as one of the industry leading margins and that is what they have done in the past. Our aspiration continues to be that," he added.

Shibulal also said, "We clearly believe that the building tomorrow's enterprise strategy and the new strategic direction we have put in place is the right one. It will increase our relevancy to our clients. It will actually create the next generation consulting and system integration corporation and that will clearly deliver our aspirations of growth and margin."

Obama bans daughters from logging into Facebook: Report

US President Barack Obama who relied heavily on the social media to boost his presidential campaign in 2008, has banned his daughters from using Facebook, a media report said today.

The 'First Social Media President' said it "does not make much sense" to put the most private details of his family life on public view. He doesn't want "strangers knowing" their family business, UK's tabloid Mail Online reported.

His elder daughter, Malia, is 13, and just old enough to use Facebook. Her younger sister Sasha is ten.

But Obama said he won't consider allowing them to join the site until they are both four years older.

His admission seems somewhat ironic, given that he made full use of Facebook and other websites to encourage the young to vote for him in the presidential election - and to raise millions of dollars for his campaign

As a result, he became known as the 'First Social Media President'. His Facebook page - which has 24 million 'likes' - remains a key part of his ongoing efforts to seek re-election.

One of the many photos on the page shows Mr Obama swimming in the sea with one of his daughters.

In an interview, the President described the thinking behind the Facebook ban as: "Why would we want to have a whole bunch of people who we don't know knowing our business? That doesn't make much sense."

He added: "We'll see how they [his daughters] feel in four years."

But he seemed to have few qualms earlier this week when using Facebook to release the latest official family portrait.

The photograph shows the President sitting with First Lady Michelle and their two daughters, all grinning broadly.

It was given the caption: 'The new Obama family portrait!' and has so far drawn 71,000 'likes' and 11,000 comments.

It was released to coincide with Christmas, but is not the official Christmas card, which shows an empty room in the White House with the family dog, Bo, lying by the fire.

Ban on bulk SMSs, MMSs withdrawn

Government on Thursday lifted the ban on bulk SMSs and MMSs with immediate effect -- a day before the earlier stipulated deadline of August 31.

The telecom ministry had, on direction of home ministry, imposed the ban for 15 days on August 17. Later, the restriction was reviewed on August 24 when the telecom ministry increased the limit from five SMSes to 20 SMSes.

"After reviewing the matter again on Thursday, the ministry lifted the restriction allowing citizens to use text messages and MMSes without any limit of numbers with immediate effect," said a home ministry official.

As MPs cutting across party lines had pitched for a foolproof mechanism to check spread of rumours that led to exodus of people from the northeast in certain states, the government on August 17 had imposed the ban on bulk SMSs and MMSs for 15 days across the country.

As per that decision, no one was allowed to send more than five SMSs at one go and more than 20 KB of data from a cellphone for the next 15 days.

Though such a ban may not put a complete check on spread of false or misleading information, officials believed that the mechanism coupled with strict monitoring of flow of SMSs had certainly acted as a deterrent.

BOOK Length : 1392 pages
BOOK File Format : PDF

BOOK Description :

Although there are many advanced and specialized texts and handbooks on algorithms, until now there was no book that focused exclusively on the wide variety of data structures that have been reported in the literature. The Handbook of Data Structures and Applications responds to the needs of students, professionals, and researchers who need a mainstream reference on data structures by providing a comprehensive survey of data structures of various types.

Divided into seven parts, the text begins with a review of introductory material, followed by a discussion of well-known classes of data structures, Priority Queues, Dictionary Structures, and Multidimensional structures. The editors next analyze miscellaneous data structures, which are well-known structures that elude easy classification. The book then addresses mechanisms and tools that were developed to facilitate the use of data structures in real programs. It concludes with an examination of the applications of data structures.
The Handbook is invaluable in suggesting new ideas for research in data structures, and for revealing application contexts in which they can be deployed. Practitioners devising algorithms will gain insight into organizing data, allowing them to solve algorithmic problems more efficiently.
