At last it’s official. After a long and restless five months of eagerness, Apple’s OS X Mountain Lion is now made available as a $20 OS upgrade exclusively for Mac users. The new Mac OS is built with a bundle of exciting new features that usually favors enterprises and common computer users. The Mountain OS also incorporates iOS applications along with core Mac OS features. Mountain Lion is jam packed with new features like enhanced security capabilities that protects the kernel during startup and new display features such as the scroll bar that widens with usage. So with that take a look at 20 most exciting features to watch out for in Apple’s OS X Mountain Lion.


#1 Dictation in all apps:


At last the voice transcription arrives on the Mac OS. With a simple keyboard shortcut or by accessing from the menu option, users can dictate in text into any text field or text window, so that the ever efficient Apple servers translates in your dictation, in any language, and places it into the text field or the text space. According to Apple, the OS X Mountain Lion supports English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish.

#2 Keep malware of your Mac:


Apple had this in mind from the past year when they had been subjected to their first serious malware attack. This time Apple has added an extra antimalware feature which is actually an updated version of the previous OS X Lion. Newly, Apple has added a Gatekeeper facility to keep the malwares out. With this facility, users will be denied to install any third party applications- apps that are not purchased from the Mac App Store. But users still can install these apps with a valid Apple ID and by disabling the Gatekeeper facility.


#3 Documents in the cloud:


This is a very good catch for enterprises. Developers can simply upload their enterprise and office apps directly intoApple’s iCloud, which enables their beloved users to retrieve documents from the cloud. This feature is available in both Apple Mac and iOS. Although this seems so easy, according to Apple, apps that are sold via the Apple store only gets the privileges to use the iCloud document APIs.


#4 Unified notifications for apps on the web:


The unified notification is another new feature in Apple OS Mountain Lion. These add-ons continuously notify the users about updations in websites, social updates and new Apple services like software updates. Another feature is that these notifications can be customized into several styles. One more notable feature is that the OS X Mountain Lion can automatically disable all the notifications when users are busy with presentations or when streaming live videos.


#5 Browser tabs across the cloud:


One of the most highlighted features in OS X Mountain Lion is the characteristic of swapping browser tabs from one machine to another. Apple’s latest browser, Safari 6.0 has an unique feature of transporting the list of recent and most used tabs from one Mac machine to another, respective of the same Apple ID. Apple is also thinking to integrate these features into their upcoming iOS 6, which is ready to be launched later this year.

#6 Read the web offline:


Another new feature to watch out for,Apple has improved its reading list capability, as it will save the web pages as soon as you read them. So users can later access them from anywhere at any time, even if they are offline, that is while travelling or while at places where the internet is not available. Safari saves the HTML web pages as it is which soon will also be seen in iOS 6.

The OS X Mountain Lion now comes up with an improved facility of incorporating social contents with the OS. The OS has the facility of sharing contents from almost all the social networking providers that includes Facebook, Twitter, Vimeo, LinkedIn and other email sites. Also the OS comes with iMessage, which is a new chat service from Apple, and AirDrop, which is an improved version of Wi-Fi transfer protocol initially introduced in OS X Lion.

It’s pretty reasonable that you got a mailbox that is so large that you won’t get to find the contact details or the messages that you pretty need the most. Now Applehas simply changed the scenario with the search command or the shortcut using the command F. According to Apple, the search works in the same way as Safari browser handles the inline messages.


#9 Greater control over personal information privacy:


Usually the tech world is interested in gathering their beloved user’s personal data and so is Apple who used to gather plenty of user information in their app stores. But now the tech giants itself has bought strong controlling policies over passing and using of user information. The OS has introduced certain Security and Privacy system preference settings where users are repeatedly asked whether to or not to send their privacy and account information’s to untrusted apps. The OS X Mountain Lion also have good and strong privacy controls over users contacts, Twitter accounts and Facebook accounts.

#10 File renaming in the title bar:


Users can rename their documents and other associated office documents while they are working on it or when the documents are kept open. OS X Mountain Lion offers this feature as the users no longer need to close the document if they want to rename it. For changing the name, users have to simply go and click on the title bar and enter the new name.


#11 Auto-setup of AirPrint printers:


Apple also has included their AirPrint technology in the OS. As the OS lets users to configure and print wirelessly, the technology is slowly gaining its reputation in homes and workplaces. Recently other tech giants like HP, also have introduced the same technology in their models. So what happens here is that as soon as the OS detects the printer, it gets and installs all the drivers automatically making it a perfectly AirPrint technology.

#12 Mirror your screen to your TV or projector:


Inherited from the iOS on the iPad, the OS X Mountain Lion now allows the users to adjust their screens to the pixels of a TV or a projector. Users can adjust their screen performance via Display preference tab and by default your Mac screen will be adjusted to the TV screen. The OS also helps to auto detect any Apple TV’s in the network. And it also has a one-click option to turn mirroring on or off.


#13 Automatic syncing of accounts and mail riles:


Earlier users used to get frustrated on constructing and reconstructing mail rules whenever they had to change their Macoperating systems. But now with OS X Mountain Lion, users can automatically get their mails and settings synchronized across all the Macs using the same iCloud ID. This feature is also soon to be supported in iOS 6.




#14 Simplified contacts manager:


It’s true that Apple had to face a lot of criticisms for their awkward looking contacts manager, which was incorporated in their previous versions. But now Apple has decided that a change is inevitable and has brought forth the former in a newly released OS X Mountain Lion. The contacts bar is better managed using sliders and well arranged panes, which is also integrated with social networking services. The OS has its contacts service integrated with Facebook, Twitter and also with Apple’s Messages chat app.

App preview is one of those features that users often get confused with. What it does is that it collects the entire app and lets the user see all the open windows and apps in his present desktop. In OS X Mountain Lion, Apple has introduced a Mission Control enhancement where the windows can be arranged and can be presented individual of each other.


#16 Compete with your friends:


Another improved feature in OS X Mountain Lion is the revamped version of Game Center. The Game Center lets users to track scores and updates of their friends and also help to analyze the performance.The Game Center is completely synchronized with iPad, iPhone and the iPod touch. The Game Center also comes up with other gaming and scoring mechanisms.


#17 Daily updates and app syncing:


With OS X Mountain Lion, users can sync all updates and installs via their app store. After installation, the OS automatically searches for updates and it starts syncing with the app store, which makes users easy to get hold of their respective updates. With more preference given to security, the OS lets users update their security, either in a daily basis or manually. The scheduled updates is been removed. Also users can set automatic updates for their system and security.

The OS X Mountain Lion comes up with a web only guest account, so that others who needs to surf the web can access the guest account which will boot into safari mode only. In this mode, the browser Safari runs as an isolated version that stores nothing even after you quit.


#19 An Independent note taking tool:


A new feature to reckon with- iOS notes are no longer handled in mails. According to Apple, the new OS from now on deals notes with its server based services as users can enjoy the extra privilege of synchronizing their data’s and notes with other individual Mac clients and iOS devices using services like iCloud and IMAP and also using other server based clients.


#20 A more professional calendar:


Apple has introduced a new and improved version of their existing calendar called the iCal. Apple has added iCal as a widget so that users can easily find and review their dates and schedules for events. Along with that Apple also have separated reminders from the calendar, as for now both stands as a separate app in the OS.
